Since September 2017, Dr.Rahim Surkhi has been a Scholar at Risk Visiting Professor at both Carleton University and University of Ottawa. He holds a PhD from Salahaddin University, Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan (KRG), specializing in Kurdish linguistics. He has 14 years of experience as a university professor teaching a variety of courses in applied linguistics. He has published in Kurdish in the areas of Kurdish language policy and planning, critical discourse studies, Kurdish linguistics, and communication. He is the author of the Kurdish monograph Critical Discourse Analysis of Kurdish Journalism (1918-1932), 2013, and The Process of Mass Commination: Language, Model & Methodology, 2008. He has also translated the following books into Kurdish: Pragmatics, by George Yul, 1996; Language, Thought and Culture, by Yadulla Muqen, 2006. His current research concerns linguistic education in Iraqi Kurdistan, language policy in Iran, and lexical variation in Kurdistan.
